Post by alanmercieca »

'Purple Heart' (it is also called ‘Sharp Velvet', sold as ‘Sharp Velvet' at Dave Wilson Nursery)

'Purple Heart' is a hybrid cultivar created by 'John M. Chater's grandfather', 'Sassin John Chater'.

The fruit of 'Purple Heart' are medium to large in size, it's fruit has a red and pink skin, with a tiny bit of yellowish green.

The arils of its fruit are dark red velvet color, and are medium to large in size, it's juice is also dark red, it's refreshing juice is sweet to sweet-tart, mildly acidic. It's fruit is resistant to cracking/bursting.

The fruit of 'Purple Heart' has medium soft to medium hard seeds.

The quality of it's fruit is better than average. It's similar to the ‘Wonderful' cultivar, only better and sweeter.

Its fruit ripens in October, although it does ripen much earlier in warmer climates. This cultivar is high production.

This cultivar is self-fertile (Self-fruitful) although if there is a pomegranate of a different cultivator nearby it can increase fruit set by up to 20%. Its chill hours is '150-200'

Cold hardy to zone 7b or colder. It appears to have above average fungal disease resistance!
