'Azadi' (means 'freedom' or 'liberty', in Persian, and in Hindi) (it is also called 'DPUN 135')
'Azadi' is of Iranian origin.
This Cultivar was test grown in Russia at the 'Kara-Kala Turkmenistan Experimental Station'. The original cutting was most likely from a farmers field 'since it was a cultivated Cultivar at the time'.
That 'Experimental Station' donated cuttings of 'Azadi' which were imported to the USA 'by Thompson Southwestern Arboretum' on January 22nd 1999.
The skin of it's fruit has a strong, yet light yellow color, sometimes with a peach tone, and with a patch of pink. The arils of it's medium to large sized fruit are pink with a touch of red, arils that easily remove from the fruit. The juice of it's fruit is very sweet with little to no noticeable acidity, and it's juice does not stain. It's juice is mild in flavor, in a Mediterranean like climate of California, just enough flavor to make it interesting. The seeds inside the arils are very soft and tender.
'Azadi' is very productive, bears consistently good crops, it's fruit ripens early to mid season, and it starts to crop at a young age.
