'Sverkhranniy' (it is also called ‘Sverkhranny‘, ‘PI 594962‘, ‘DPUN 13‘, ‘DPUN 013‘, ‘BE 7657‘)
This cultivar was test grown in Russia at the 'Kara-Kala Turkmenistan Experimental Station'. The original cutting was most likely from a farmers field 'since it was a cultivated variety at the time'.
That 'Experimental Station' donated cuttings of 'Sverkhranniy' which were received on September 8th 1995.
In the ground this cultivar can reach about 8 feet in height, and about 5 feet in width, it is very resistant to drought once it's well rooted in the ground.
'Sverkhranniy' has 'Orange-red blossoms'.
The large fruit of ‘Sverkhranniy’ has a red and pink skin, with brown markings.
The arils of its fruit are red in color, the juice of 'Sverkhranniy' has a 'Sweet' taste, and those arils contain very soft tender seeds!
‘Sverkhranniy’ means super early in Russian, ‘Sverkhranniy’ is very early ripening (ripening in about 'early-August' to 'mid-August').
Its blossoms bloom 'July', 'August', and 'September', even earlier in warmer climates. This cultivar is self-fertile (Self-fruitful) although if there is a pomegranate of a different cultivar nearby it can increase fruit set by up to 20%.
Is cold hardy, can sometimes regrow from its trunk, after die back to the ground, and still bear fruit. 'Sverkhranniy' is one of the pomegranate cultivars which you can try growing when your climate is too cold for the average pomegranate cultivar. It might die at 10.4 degree Fahrenheit. Might be more cold hardy than that. 6.8 degrees Fahrenheit or colder?
