Hotuni Zigar (pomegranate)

Post by alanmercieca »

'Hotuni Zigar' (it is also called 'DPUN 104')

This cultivar was test grown in Russia at the 'Kara-Kala Turkmenistan Experimental Station'. The original cutting was most likely from a farmers field 'since it was a cultivated variety at the time'.

That 'Experimental Station' donated cuttings of 'Hotuni Zigar' which were imported to the USA 'by Thompson Southwestern Arboretum' on January 22nd 1999.

The fruit of 'Hotuni Zigar' are larger than average, up to 5 inches in diameter! The skin of its fruit is a shiny pinkish red.

The arils of 'Hotuni Zigar' are a dark ruby red.

The juice of 'Hotuni Zigar' has a rich and strong sweet-tart berry like flavor, and is somewhat sweeter than ‘Wonderful’, although its large seeds are a little harder than the seeds of the ‘Wonderful’ cultivar.

The juice of 'Hotuni Zigar' is as dark as Concord grape juice.

The fruit of 'Hotuni Zigar' ripens quite early in the season.

This cultivar is self-fertile (Self-fruitful) although if there is a pomegranate of a different cultivar nearby it can increase fruit set by up to 20%.
