Al-Sirin (pomegranate)

Post by alanmercieca »

'Al-Sirin' (it is also called 'Russian 6', 'DPUN060', 'DPUN 60', 'Al-Sirin-Nor', 'Al Sirin Nar', Al-sirin-nar', 'Al-sirini-nar', 'Al Sarin Nar')

This Cultivar was originally from Azerbaijan.

This Cultivar was test grown in Russia at the 'Kara-Kala Turkmenistan Experimental Station'. The original cutting was most likely from a farmers field 'since it was a cultivated Cultivar at the time'.

That 'Experimental Station' donated cuttings of 'Al-Sirin' which were imported to the USA on 'January 1982'.

Its large red fruit has a soft peel, the skin color is like a candy apple. It's juice has a very sweet taste with a sweet-tart balance, and just a little bit of bitterness. It's large, very juicy, big red arils, they contain hard seeds. It's an excellent cultivar for juicing, its seeds are too hard, and too large to be used for eating fresh. It's fruit is resistant to cracking/bursting.

'Al-Sirin' is 'very productive', it is capable of high commercial success. It's fruit ripens in September and October. It's fruit has a resistance against sunburn.

The bloom time of this cultivar is 'May, and June.

Very cold hardy, can sometimes regrow from its trunk, after die back to the ground, and still bear fruit. 'Al-Sirin' is one of the pomegranate cultivars which you can try growing when your climate is too cold for the average pomegranate cultivar. Hardy down to at least -15 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit). Most likely it's more cold hardy than that.

The growth rate of it's vegetation is 'vigorous', it's very resistant to drought.
