Agat (pomegranate)

'Agat' is also called 'DPUN 105'.

This cultivar was developed, and test grown in Russia at the 'Dushanbe Turkmenistan Experimental Station'.

'Agat' was brought in to the USA by 'Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum' on 'January 22nd 1999.

This dense compact cultivar is very resistant to cold. This naturally low-growing spreading 'Russian cultivar' was developed to withstand heavy snow cover, as well as cold all winter. Using the snow cover as insulation from extreme cold. The insulating effect of the snow allows it to survive a climate with even colder winters.

The peel's color is like that of a yellow onion, with pink or red areas, with a tiny bit of brown.

Medium-large fruit, it's sharp flavored juice is sweet-tart-acid when ripe, even when it's fruit has a Brix of 17 'as much sugar as some sweet pomegranates have, very sweet', it is still sour and tart sort of like a lemon. High heat from the sun helps lessen that.

This cultivar has highly transparent arils with a pinkish tone when ripe. It's seeds are so soft that some people consider this cultivar to be 'seedless', it's small seeds are flexible, making it way more pleasant to eat fresh.

This cultivar is highly productive, despite it being a dwarfed cultivar, out-producing some normal sized cultivars with it's Medium-large sized fruit, it is well suited for high-density plantings, and this cultivar does well in pots.

Early 2 inch to 3 inch blooms of orange form May-June, followed by ripe pomegranates in September/October, great for a short growing season.

This cultivar can reach about 5 feet in height/about 5 feet in width, and it's very resistant to drought.
