Re: Looking for Zone 7b Fig Advice

I have some in shrub form for the reason that you mentioned, but now I'm trying to train them as permanent horizontal trunks just above ground level. These will send up shoots along the length of the trunk that will get pruned off back to a bud at the end of the season to be replaced with new shoot...

Re: Looking for Zone 7b Fig Advice

6 winters! Time sure passes by fast. This is only the 4th winter for the figs though... Our fig trees are still producing figs, yet bland and not sweet, with thicker peels. Here they are drier this time of year as well, yet I think that it has to do with the cold and the shorter hours of sun, it ma...

Re: Looking for Zone 7b Fig Advice

Well, the combination of cold temps 20F / 6C and short daylight hours have killed the leaves, except for a few near the ground at the base of the young trees. However, much to my surprise even w/o leaves, the remaining figs are still attempting to ripen!! Picked and ate two more today. Not great. Th...

Re: Looking for Zone 7b Fig Advice

Last night's snow weighed down the top covering, loosening clips on one side, and there was a gap when I went out to look at the figs this morning. Also, strong winds are a problem if it gets under the edges making the material billow out. So I've had to redo the clips on the east side the past two ...

Re: Looking for Zone 7b Fig Advice

Took these photos yesterday morning. Temps were in the low 30sF (1-2C). eFigBed-Cathedral-LightsAglow.jpg 7am before sunrise eFigBed-Cathedral-LightsAmongLeaves_7466.jpg Incandescent lights among the fig tree leaves. Note how healthy and green the leaves still are even though we've already had tempe...

Re: Looking for Zone 7b Fig Advice

e2020-FIG-Cathedral-FrostCloth-Wrapped.jpg Here are the wrapped 'cathedrals. They will outgrow those sheltering 'cathedrals' eventually since you built them in that shape, more narrow at the top, unless you keep them pruned lower. They are likely to grow wider as well. How tall and wide are those f...

Re: Looking for Zone 7b Fig Advice

Good News! Harvested my first ripe 'Dominick's' fig last night...small, but tasty. We have about 5 dozen figs on this tree and hope several more will ripen before years end. We are using yet a different approach of protecting the fig trees and creating a warmer micro-climate, so the fruit on the yo...

Re: Looking for Zone 7b Fig Advice

eFIGtrees_6872.jpg Our two fig trees, Dominick's and Aldo are growing well, but are behind last summer's growth at about half the height they attained then. This is their 3rd full year of being in the ground. eFIGtree-Aldo_6875.jpg Aldo Fig is just about the height of tall iris leaves (behind it). ...

Re: Looking for Zone 7b Fig Advice

As far as protecting the root zone again yes certainly do that, like I said the roots are very sensitive. These trees have already seen two winters, so not covering them up either would happen next winter or this winter. The thing that worries me is how strong the wind you have in the winter is, an...

Re: Looking for Zone 7b Fig Advice

When fig trees have dieback, they grow back bushy. That is their nature. Sounds like they are doing great. So...we have already had very cold temperatures for a short time, mid-teens to high 20'sF, at least three different times this past month. The cold came early before the trees had entered dorm...
